Only 4 more days to register for the Chapman Championship on Aug. 4th

Both Players play from the teeing ground and then each plays his partner's ball for

the 2nd shot. After the 2nd shots, the partners select the ball with which they wish to score, and play that ball alternately to complete the whole. For this format the team handicap will be comprised of 60% of the lower handicapped Players handicap & 40% of the higher Player's handicap.

For this event, the teams will be flighted according to combined handicaps of the partners. Prizes will be awarded to low gross of the field as well as to the net winners of each of the flights. Additional net winners will be awarded evenly across all flights, so that approximately 1/3 of the field receives an award.

Lots to cover in this issue, so please bear with me.

Red, White & Blue Tournaments:  As we enter the final 4 days of registration, the

signup volume does not support, trying to hold a 4 person team tournament, on either

Thursday or Saturday. Therefore it has been decided that these 2 events will be played

as Individual stroke play within flights based upon handicaps. There may also be a

couple of other twists; such as  where the handicap strokes are given, since we are

in effect, playing a custom setup. The first 6 holes are played from the red tees, holes

7 thru 12 from the whites, and 13 thru 18 from the blues. Should be fun, hope you’re

able to make it.

Upcoming Wednesday Night Events:

“Horse Race” July 13th: The entry fee is $20 each. This could be the most fun

and “profitable” event each year. For those who have never played (and those

needing a refresher), here’s how it goes.2 Man teams are randomly drawn (1 from the low

handicap group & 1 from the high), and they play alternate shots throughout the hole.

So, if the A player hits the tee shot, B hits the second, and this rotation continues until the

ball is holed out. The holes played are #1 thru #5 and #9 on the Links, for a total of

six holes. With me so far?

The team score is added for the 1st three holes. At this point a designated number of

Teams (number is TBD because it’s based upon the total entries) with the highest

scores may be eliminated. There is another elimination after hole # 4, and a final

elimination after hole # 5. May be eliminated, you ask? That is right because, any team

that is eliminated has the option to buy back in! The 1st buyback after hole #3 costs each

team member $10, the 2nd is $15 each and the last is $20 each. All of this buying back in

makes for a very healthy payoff (winners in past events have pocketed several hundred $$$ each)

First, second & third place teams split the pot.

Lastly, there are a couple very important aspect to the Horse Race which is not like anything else

you may have played. First, we all play the holes together. That’s right, if we have 12 teams, all hit

their drives and we head on down the fairway together. Furthest away plays next until we reach

the green, where the closest to putts first.

The final element regards etiquette. Silence while others are hitting is not only not required, it’s

actually frowned upon. That’s right, jiggle that pocket change, pass gas, belch, critique the practice

swing. It’s all fair at the race.

So come on out! You must be registered in the pro shop no later than 5pm on Wednesday.

The team of Jeff Petra & Paul Dugaw combined 4 birdies with 17 pars, to accumulate

85 points, and win the Net title. On the gross side, the only change from the last Club Major, was

Gary Lueckenotte's partner. Gary and his guest Tom Blouin, compiled 66 points for a 2 point margin

and his Guest, Scott Schlatter for their final 9 holes.

Once again, Kevin and staff did a fantastic job in supporting our event. Another outstanding meal was

prepared and served by Richard and his crew. Our own personal beverage cart was on hand for post

tournament festivities. The use of the Woodlands Banquet Room added an extra element of “V.I.P.”

For those of you who may not have heard yet, an event of historical significance in Northwest Golf took place this week.

The USGA announced the selection of John Bodenhamer (Executive Director of the WSGA & PNGA) as the new

Senior Managing Director of Rules, Competitions & Amateur Status.

PNGA and WSGA Executive Director Selected by USGA

John Bodenhamer will leave the Northwest to join senior staff of golf’s governing body

John Bodenhamer, the longtime CEO and Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) and the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA), has accepted a position on the senior staff of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and will be taking over his new duties at the USGA offices in Far Hills, N.J. no later than August 1, 2011. Bodenhamer will join the USGA as the Senior Managing Director of Rules, Competitions & Amateur Status. Among other duties, he will oversee the conduct of the USGA’s national championships, and will report to new USGA Executive Director Mike Davis.

“I am thrilled that John will be joining our staff,” said Davis . “His background in golf administration will be an incredible asset to the USGA.” Bodenhamer will also join Davis in interacting with and participating in meetings with the Equipment Standards department.  “He brings a vast amount of experience and knowledge to the USGA,” continued Davis . “I am personally very excited that he will be joining us.”

Bodenhamer, 49, has become synonymous with golf in the Pacific Northwest , and his departure is bittersweet. “The PNGA and golf in the Northwest have been very fortunate to have had such a tremendous leader for the past 21 years,” said PNGA President, Dr. Jack Lamey. “We are extremely sad to see John leave, but we are proud and excited to have someone from the Northwest taking such a high level position with the USGA” And this from WSGA President, Ben Grinspan: “The WSGA has had the very good fortune to have John as our Executive Director for 19 years and are extremely proud of him being offered his new position at the USGA.  We are confident he will excel as much in his new position as he has here at the WSGA and we wish him much continued success."

The Board of Directors for both the PNGA and WSGA are working on choosing a successor and expect a rapid and smooth transition at the two Associations.

In a letter to his colleagues and friends in which he announced his decision to leave, Bodenhamer expressed his own feelings of sadness at leaving but also his excitement in his new challenge. “This decision was extremely difficult for me personally, as well as for my family,” he said. “It has been a true labor of love to have worked alongside so many dedicated volunteers, fellow staff, and friends who care deeply about the good of the game of golf and our Associations. I will always consider these the best years of my life, having spent them here in the Pacific Northwest with our Associations….The professional challenges and opportunities this new position affords are significant. For these reasons and more, I have concluded it is a path I am very excited to take.”

Bodenhamer served as the CEO and Executive Director of the PNGA since 1990, the CEO and Executive Director of the WSGA since 1992, and Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Golf Association since 1998. He also served as the CEO for The Home Course in DuPont , Wash. , which was the assisting course with Chambers Bay in hosting the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. Bodenhamer has served on a variety of USGA committees over the years, including the USGA Regional Affairs Associations Committee, USGA Amateur Status Committee, and the USGA Handicap Procedures Committee. He served as president of the International Association of Golf Administrators in 2000-01, and currently sits on the board of directors for the First Tee of Greater Seattle.

A few of the many accomplishments during his tenure are the founding of Pacific Northwest Golfer magazine, which has become the standard for excellence in golf association publications and for which he has served as publisher for 17 years; overseeing the successful reorganization of the WSGA in 1992; the publication in 1999 of the monumental Championships & Friendships, the PNGA centennial history book; hosting the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship at The Home Course as the event’s assisting course; and seeing the WSGA grow into the ninth largest golf association under the USGA GHIN umbrella.

Prior to joining the PNGA, Bodenhamer served as a member of the judiciary committee staff for U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, from 1988 to 1990. Bodenhamer, who earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Brigham Young University, was a member the Cougars’ golf team that won the Division I national team title in 1981. He won both the PNGA Junior Championship and Washington State Junior Championship in 1978; and also the WSGA’s Washington State Amateur in 1981, with the championship’s perpetual trophy being named after him. He is a two-time Alaska State Open champion, in 1987 and 1988, and has played in two U.S. Amateurs, in 1984 and 1985.

He and his wife Pam have two teenage children, John Jr. and Megan.

Website Updates:

New on the home page (in the upper left corner) is “Quick Stats”

Here we’ll keep a running count of prize money paid out, and

        other Interesting (hopefully) Club stats.

The menu tab that used to say “Club News & Info” has been

changed to “HPMC E-Newsletter. All of the old info is still there

but we’ve added the most current newsletter that has been sent

(like this one). There is also a link on this page to a newsletter

archive. When you click on this you’ll be able to pull up all of the

current year’s newsletters. This should be especially helpful for

new Members, as they can catch up with news, that happened

                                prior to their join date.

HPMC News 4-1-11:

Registration Now Open for the year’s first Major Championship!

That’s right, the Member & Member Championship tees off on April 30th and May 1st.

(Please Note: This is a change from the posted schedule and was necessitated  because

The original dates selected fell on Easter weekend).

The Member / Member is traditionally one of our most popular tournaments of the season and this

year should prove to be no different. Kevin has put together a great 2 day course fee package of

just $82 per player which includes green fees, range and shared cart for both days. On Friday

night the 29th at 6:30 there will be a “Pairings Party” with refreshments provided courtesy of

Steve Platt. In addition there will be food / beverages and / or tee gifts provided by the Club.

Don’t delay – grab your partner and sign up today!

The first month of the 2011 season wraps up much the same way we started. Our first event

had to be re-scheduled due to several inches of snow covering the courses. Not to be undone, the

month’s final event, was played on the Links Course in driving rain and gusty winds. But, here’s

the interesting part of the story. We of the HPMC, once again proved to be a pretty stout group,

when it comes to our golf. Roughly 80% of our Members turned out,  to play in at least 1 tournament

round. We played 201 total tournament rounds, of which 138 were 18 holes and 63 were Wednesday

evening 9 holers!

While I’m on the statistics bandwagon, here are some more you may find interesting. I share these

in the hope, that you will pass them on as well, particulary to those who say they have no chance to

win. Whether they say it’s because “The same old guys always win” or “Only the low handicappers

win” or fill in the blank here_____________________, the facts don’t support these claims, at least

not in our Club.

Of those who competed in Club events last month:

Thus far, our new flighting formula for 2011 has produced not only more winners, but closer competition

as well. In our 3, full 18 hole events, we have had a total of 5 flights. There have been ties in 3 of those

flights for money positions and the average margin of victory is 2 strokes or less. It’s quite possible

that the difference between being on the list of not winning, and cashing, quite literrally came down

to 1 or 2 missed putts.

So, what does this all mean anyhow? It means, that our tournaments are fair and competitive for all.

The Board would appreciate your spreading the word to your friends and fellow golfers. The one thing

that can make our events better is for you and your friends to come out and join us!

HPMC News 3-21-11:

Registration will close for this Saturdays 6 – 6 – 6 tournament the day after tomorrow and

for next Wednesday’s tournament on Sunday the 27th. I’d like to take just a second to explain why these deadlines are in place and will be enforced.

  1)      The Golf Shop blocks out a group of tee times in advance for our tournaments. If we do not fill all of these times, they need to have

a couple of days to sell them to the general public.

  2)      My intention for this season, is to send out via email, the tournament pairings and the “Rules of the Competition”, no later than

noon on the day before the event. In order to make this happen, I need to have time to put together pairings, scorecards, rules

        sheets etc.

  3)      Once all of the pairings, scorecards etc. have been prepared it’s a “major” pain to have to re-shuffle the deck, to accommodate late

         signups.

So, last call for the 666’s, grab a buddy and get signed up, for this 2 man event. Don’t have a Partner, no worries we’ll pair you up. This

is a great kickoff format !

6 Holes of SCRAMBLE:  Both players tee off and then select the best shot.

Both players hit from this spot and repeat until the ball is holed.

6 Holes of SHAMBLE:  Both players tee off and then select the best shot.

Both players hit from this spot, but finish their own ball from that point.

6 Holes of BEST BALL:  Both players play their own ball through out the hole and then

 select the best gross score.

March Sponsor Specials:  "Free" pair of socks with purchase of golf shoes & 25%

off all "in stock" rain apparel at “GOLF USA ” Lacey.

Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays 10am until Noon play for only $15 per hour at Xtreme Indoor Golf.

                                                                            That's a saving of $10!

HPMC News 3-10-11:

I know it may be hard to believe, looking outside right now, but

“Golf Season” is here. Last Saturday was our first Tournament of

the year, six days from from now is our first Wenesday “ 9 Holer”

and the Master’s kicks off 4 weeks from today! Time to knock

off that winter rust and get out on the links.

 G. A. Scramble Results :  The team of Mark Biscay, Devin Harder,

Duke Schaub and Jim Rozmaryn parlayed 12 birdies & 6 pars into

a 2 stroke victory. Gary Lueckenotte, Caleb Bogar, Joe Gilfillan &

Mark Ahern shot 62 and finished 1 better than Jim Cahill, John Hicks,

Chuck Blacketer & Carl Schwarmann. “Click Here” for full results.

Spring Match Play Championships Begin :   The brackets are set,

let the matches begin! You can follow the action over the next 2 months

by checking in regularly via the Tournaments page on our website. Just

click on the tournament page and then either the gross or net play

bracket & results link.

Whom To Contact:  If you have any club related issues, handicap,

Tournament sign up etc. you should  make your first stop the “Contact Us”

Page on the website. This is the most effective method of getting your

Issue addressed and resolved in a timely manner.

Just so you understand, if you call the Golf shop with your concern,

they will just forward the message on to the appropriate Board Member

or Committee Chair, the next time they see them. So, save time and

possible aggravation and contact us directly. Kevin and his Staff are

not responsible for administering our Club business.

Registrations Open:  Both of the 6-6-6 tournaments (March 26th & 30th) are

Now open for registration. “Click Here” to register now while you’re thinking

about it. It’ also not too early to begin thinking about next month’s

Member Member Championship, the first “Major” of the 2011 season. Registration

Opens in about 2 weeks so, pick your partner and clear the weekend of

April 23rd and 24th. You don’t want to miss this one!

Score Posting:  Effective March 1st we are all now required, to post all

acceptable scores. “Click Here” for a refresher course on the “Handicap System & You”.

Now it’s really Time:    OK,  you missed the early bird renewal savings of $10 and

hey, that’s alright. But now, with changes to the WSGA billing system, we have had to

place all 2010 Members who have not renewed as of March 1st on the inactive roster.

This was necessary because as of that date, the Club would be billed for handicap

services for all active members on our roster.  We had no way to know what the

Intentions were of those who had not renewed. Therefore all non -renewed were

placed in the inactive status. While “inactive” you will be unable to post scores or

compete in Club tournaments.

Once your 2011 dues are paid it is quite easy for our Handicap Chairman to have

your status returned to active. Jesse usually makes this happen within 24 hours.

Probably the most significant consequence of non-renewal is that at some point you will

no longer receive these “HPMC News” updates. It’s hard for me to conceive of someone

getting by without these pearls of wisdom.

L Bad News first:  Due to our current snow event, the Get Acquainted Scramble scheduled for this Saturday has been

moved to Saturday march 5th.

J The Good News?

I’m glad you asked. For those who were unable to play this weekend, registration is now re-opened through next

Wednesday March 2nd.

Happy Hour Review: Great food, even better company, we have to do this more often! The next best thing to playing golf, has got to be gathering with kindred souls to talk golf. That’s what a few dozen of us did this past Tuesday night. Several of our 2011 Season Sponsors were on hand to meet and greet. They also supplied items for drawings which included; a dozen Pro V1’s and gift cards for free simulator rounds at Extreme Golf and GOLF USA.

Many Thanks to Jeff & Felix from Edward Jones, Ted from Extreme Golf and Matt & Jeff from GOLF USA. You guys are the best!

Note: One of our fellow Members said to me on Tuesday, that he didn’t like to pay online for our tournaments, because he did not like to pay a fee for this service. As a reminder to all, there is no fee charged to your credit card for this service! It is supplied strictly as a convenience to those Members who choose to use it.

Understanding Our Match Play Championship:

The format is just like what is being played this week on the PGA Tour. We set up a bracket for both gross & net divisions. Your choice as to which one or both you wish to play. Then you contact the member you are scheduled to play. Set a time convenient for both of you and play your match ( the Tournament Committee has provided a generous 2 week window for each match to be played). Winners move on to their next match, until there is only one man standing, and he is crowned Champion

In the Net Division, let’s say I’m a 10 hdcp. (don’t I wish) and you are a 6. For our match you would give me a stroke on the 4 hardest handicap holes on the scorecard.

This really is a great opportunity to compete, as the founders of the game intended, hundreds of years ago! In fact, initially all of the Major Championships were contested at Match with the exception of the Masters.

                                  Who Will it Be?

The chase for the crystal begins with next weekend’s first event.

Handicap Chair Reminder:  As I sit here watching the snow fall outside my office, the following seems almost impossible. It is a fact though, next Tuesday the 1st is the beginning of score posting season. So, don’t forget to post all scores to either the GHIN or EZ-Links computers (as applicable) upon the completion of your rounds.

Also, for those Members who have yet to pay your 2011 dues, after March 1st you may be placed inactive on the handicap computers. When this happens you will be unable to post scores or enter Club competitions until your membership is renewed.

Good news is, with the delay in the Get Acquainted Tournament, the $10 discount for renewals & new memberships is also extended for 1 more week!

Several of the Sponsors will be on hand, so stop on by and thank them for their support, as we prepare to make 2011 the best season yet at Hawks Prairie. I even heard a rumor that Kevin might break out the Karaoke box, and serenade us with tunes from the movie “Tin Cup”.

Sponsor Updates: The Board is pleased to announce the addition of 2 new Sponsors for the 2011 season, Edward Jones Investments and Extreme Indoor Golf.

Felix Peguero and Jeff Kopp from Edward Jones, have long served the investment needs of the Hawks Prairie and Jubilee Communities. Now they have joined forces, to sponsor our 2nd Major Championship of the year, The 2011 Edward Jones Member / Guest Championship. Due to their very generous contribution this promises to be the best Member Guest tournament in our Club’s history.

Extreme Indoor Golf recently opened their doors in the old Kirk’s Drugs location on Martin Way. Their 4 golf simulators provide climate controlled access to 28 championship courses throughout the world. With hours from 10am – 11pm Mon. through Fri. and 8am – 11pm on Sat. and Sun., this family owned business, is ready to serve your golfing desires day and night, no matter the weather. Through their 2011 sponsorship, all members will receive a discount when you stop by and try out the simulators. WSGA Posting reminder:

Your Score Posting Responsibilities During the Active-Inactive Seasons

If you are playing in an area that is still accepting scores for handicap purposes (Arizona, Hawaii, California, etc.), even though the WSGA is not, you must post every acceptable score as soon as practicable. The preferred method of posting is at the club where you played. Posting your scores via the Internet through GHIN.com or when you return to your home club should be the last posting options used, not the first. If you are unsure of what scores are acceptable/unacceptable please contact your handicap chairperson or a member of the WSGA Membership Services Department.

Each year we do have a number of WSGA Member Clubs that do take advantage of a program that allows their members, during the Inactive Score Posting Season, to post two types of scores only, home scores from rounds played at their home WSGA Member Club or away scores from areas still accepting scores. Home scores can only be posted through the WSGA Handicap Computer at the player’s home club. Home scores will be designated by the letter “H”, will reside on the home course computer only, will never be transmitted to GHIN and will never be used to calculate a USGA Handicap Index for the individual member.

During our inactive score posting season, the WSGA Membership Services Department does monitor scores sent to GHIN and should we find what we believe are unacceptable scores listed in your membership record at GHIN we will contact your Handicap Chairperson and have them remove the scores from your record should they determine that the scores are unacceptable for handicap purposes.

Update Your GHIN Contact Information Online!

The WSGA is excited to announce an easy and convenient online option for our members to update their GHIN contact information. By keeping your contact information up-to-date, it allows us to make sure you receive your eRevision, special offer announcements and your issue of Pacific Northwest Golfer magazine.

SAVE THESE DATES!!!

Seattle Golf & Travel Show - February 11 – 13

Reminder: This is last week to take advantage of “Golf USA” special discount on club re-gripping

Don’t know if you have had a chance to check out the new “Xtreme Indoor Golf” on Martin Way, but if not you should check it out! They have got 4 simulators and 28 courses from around the world that you can play. Ted Trask is the owner and it’s a totally family run operation. I spent some time there yesterday and they are really friendly folks..

It’s located in the old Kirk’s Drug location in the Tanglewilde strip mall (7135 Martin Way E.). They’ve got a pretty good special running right now.

A foursome for $100 includes:

3 hours of simulator time (should be ample time to complete 18 holes)

4 brats / hot dogs

8 beverages (includes beer!)

OK, It may not be the same as teeing it up on your favorite links, but for January it’s a good way to knock the rust off. Tee it up at Pebble in 68* weather with no wind or rain, and only 20 feet from the beverage cart and rest rooms, with Golf Channel playing on the flat screen, what’s not to like?

And you can play at night!  With hours of Mon - Fri 10am – 11pm & Sat - Sun 8am – 11pm there’s plenty of time to get in a round after work.

I’m thinking of teeing it up tomorrow around 6 ish if anyone is interested, let me know.
